Schools closed for rest of school year

Dear District 54 Community,

Good afternoon District 54 families. As you have probably heard, Governor Pritzker has announced that schools will remain closed for the rest of this school year.

Let me acknowledge that this is not ideal. The ideal situation would be having children at school connecting in person with their peers, their teachers and other staff. I think we can all acknowledge that.

While we were really hoping we would be able to bring students back to school this year, we were also anticipating this announcement and planning for it. We are committed to helping students to grow academically and supporting their well-being. We will continue to offer remote learning as we have for the past four weeks.

I know with the governor’s announcement you have questions. You are probably wondering about eighth-grade graduations and other important end-of-the-year celebrations. We are currently working on plans to commemorate these moments.

Some of you may have items in the schools that you need to retrieve. We have a plan to safely provide you access to the schools and we will share those specifics with you soon.

To our students – we miss you. Thank you for staying connected to your teachers and each other through virtual learning. We are going to keep teaching you and caring about you. We are still here for you.

To the families of our students – thank you. We know you didn’t plan to spend the last two months of the school year helping your children with school work at home. Your support for your children, our teachers and each other has been amazing. You are an integral part of what we do.

While our school doors are closed, we are committed to doing whatever it takes to support our students this year. If there is anything we can do to support you, please reach out to your child’s teacher, social worker or any other trusted adult. I look forward to the day when we can all be together again.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Andy DuRoss
