Dear MacArthur Community,

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and that you have enjoyed the break from the cold weather!  Students and staff were back in the swing of things this week at Mac. We are setting goals for the second half of the school year and students are eager to share their academic and behavior goals with you during Student-led Conferences in February.  We will welcome students and their parents to Mac during the afternoon and evening of Thursday, February 13, and the morning of Friday, February 14. Please read on for important announcements including this month’s edition of the PTA newsletter.

Mac News- January

Upcoming Events for Incoming Students

There are two upcoming opportunities for incoming MacArthur families to start planning for next school year.  In order to make sure that no one misses these dates, we are asking for your help to spread the message to any neighbors that may have an incoming kindergarten student next year.

First, we have our annual Open Enrollment Fair on Wednesday, January 29.  The Open Enrollment Fair is an evening designed for families to see which District 54 schools offer programs of choice.  Mac will be represented at the fair as we showcase our Spanish/English Dual Language Program.  The Open Enrollment Fair runs from 6:00-7:30PM at the Professional Learning Center, 522 East Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg.

In addition, on Wednesday, February 5 we will host Kindergarten Registration.  Kindergarten Registration is for any incoming MacArthur-based kindergarteners for the 2020-2021 school year.  Registration will take place at Mac from 9:00-11:00AM and 5:00-7:00PM.

Adult ASL Class Opportunity

District 54’s Deaf Education teacher is offering free sign language classes for parents within District 54 that are interested in learning! The six-week course will be held at Blackwell Elementary from 6:00-7:30PM on Thursdays (1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13). There are no prerequisites to join and childcare will be offered for those who need it. If you would like to sign up, please contact Mary Jo Morley at 847-357-5123 or maryjomorley@nullsd54.org. If you need additional information, please contact Emily Kulacz at emilykulacz@nullsd54.org.

Winter Cold Season- Strep Throat

If your child develops symptoms similar to those of strep infection, please contact your physician. Some of the symptoms are sore throat, fever, red throat, swollen glands, vomiting. Please inform the school nurse of a confirmed case. Remember that good hand washing is the number one way to prevent the spread of communicable disease.

For additional information, please review the attached flyer Strep Throat

Winter MAP Reports

Parent reports for winter MAP testing were published to the parent portal this morning.

District 54 Severe Weather Response Plan
In order to help parents better prepare for the severe cold weather and snow we often get during winters in our community, I wanted to share with you the District 54 Severe Cold Weather Response Plan. The plan outlines responses to a wind chill warning, wind chill advisory and emergency school closing procedures.  A copy of the Severe Weather Response Plan is posted on the District 54 website here.

Schaumburg Parent University – January classes
Schaumburg Parent University (SPU) is designed to involve more parents in the life of the school, to strengthen family relationships, and to improve parenting skills that will ultimately result in improved student success academically, socially and emotionally. Please note that childcare is always available.

Vaping: New Trends and Impact on our Youth – January 30
According to the American Lung Association, more than 3.6 million U.S. middle and high school students have reported using e-cigarettes in the past 30 days. This presentation will help parents learn more about the dangers of vaping/e-cigarettes and how to detect if your children are using them. Our presenters will also discuss how to talk to your children about drug use and how to help them quit these addictive products. For parents and their children (ages preteen and older). Presented in English and Spanish by the Elk Grove Village Police Dept. and Kenneth Young Center. This event will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the District 54 Professional Learning Center, 522 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg (Door C1). Vaping flyer
